The "Good Country Index" measures what each country on earth contributes to the common good of humanity. Its creator has broken this contribution down into 7 categories. Belgium ranks first when it comes to culture.

Belgium heads up the pack of the following countries: Norway, Denmark, France and Canada.

The creator of this new index, Simon Anholt, uses databases such as the World Bank, the United Nations and others to define seven categories: science and technology, culture, security and international peace, world order, planet and climate, equality and prosperity, health and well-being.

Five criteria have to be met in the categories defined. Belgium comes away with the number one spot in the “Culture" category. The areas are: exports of creative goods and services, freedom of the press, freedom of movement, UNESCO dues in arrears as % of contribution.

In the “health and well-being” category, the criteria are pharmaceutical exports, food aid, voluntary extra donations to the WHO, humanitarian aid donations, drug seizures.
